iZoho - Zoho for iPhone

Raju Vegesna  June 28, 2007 11: 00 am

…or should I say ‘Office for your iPhone‘. This is fun project going live in record time (thanks to our APIs and of course our team).
iZoho (no, its not an online desktop :)) is an easier way to access your Zoho Apps on your Mobile…atleast, iPhone for now. Sure, you can use Zoho Apps in their current form on your iPhone, but there is lot of stuff you don’t need on your mobile phone. So we simplified the interface and just provided simple features you’d normally use on a mobile phone.

We have three applications available currently in iZoho - Zoho Writer, Sheet and Show which lets you view your documents, spreadsheets and presentations in Zoho. Currently you can view and edit your documents, but you cannot edit your spreadsheets and presentations (you can only view them). You can also create new documents and view your presentations in landscape mode. There will be more features coming as we move along.
Frankly, we don’t know how this will work on iPhone as we haven’t tested it. It certainly works well on Safari so we hope it’ll be a non-issue. In any case, we will be fine tuning this over the next few days.

As I mentioned earlier, a device with a big screen, built in Wi-Fi, good usability and a full fledged browser will only improve the chances of practically using web apps on a mobile device.
Do give it a try and let us know what you think (support at zoho.com). Below are some screenshots.

Office Apps on the iPhone: iPhone vs Blackberry…

It’s possible the iPhone launch on Friday 29 June is more hype than substance - indeed the current poll we’re running on R/WW has only 20% of respondants interested in buying an iPhone as soon as it’s released! 41% have……

    Thanks for your comments Ioannus.

Jamie: We need to test it on an iPhone. Based on the experience, we will make necessary changes. The aim is to make the document viewing/editing experience simple.

RS: Did you test it with N95? None of us here have it so we could’nt test it. It’ll useful if you can share your experience.

Very, very, very cool. I don’t have an iPhone, but you’re making we want one. Would love to see Zoho Wiki on there.

As usual, ZOHO is ahead of the curve. Raju, looking at the screenshot of the Zoho writer, it looks like that the font size very very tiny and maybe you are trying to cram lot of stuff on the small screen. A fewer bigger buttons and bigger readable font size may be the way to go.

What about Google office suite? Hmmm… I haven’t heard anything regarding availability on iPhone. Looks like Zoho is clearly thinking fast and cleary ahead of the game.

[…] I’ve read some beefs about the lack of applications offered for the iPhone, but I don’t think this device needs a ‘killer app‘ to make it work. For example, providers of browser-based office suites such as Zoho and Google Apps are well placed to benefit from Apple’s target demographic: the highly-mobile business executive and/or manager and/or college student. Similarly, your pastor may enjoy the ability to leave the laptop at home or office to pickup and finalize documents started on the road; […]

I’ve just had a play with Zoho Creator and put together an app that I’ve started to write about five times and implemented in about a week in OO.org Calc. In an hour. It’s a phenomenal piece of software.

It would be THE killer app bar none on the iPhone, if only the UI were more useable and functional. The sizing is a problem, but the lack of richer UI elements like the date pop-up and on user input scripts to update the UI makes apps far more difficult to use than they could be.

I can’t wait for the next updates. Keep up the fantastic work!
