Zoho, Google Gears, HTML5

Today, Google announced that they will no longer support Google Gears . You may be aware that we have been using Google Gears to offer offline support in Zoho Applications .

Google team is gracious to inform us about this decision in advance and the intentions behind this move, which we very much respect. At Zoho, we see HTML5 as the future of the web, and we plan to move our apps in this direction.

As far as Offline support for existing Zoho Apps (Zoho Writer & Zoho Mail, primarily) are concerned, they will continue to work for now as we migrate towards HTML5. We internally are experimenting with HTML5 and we are excited to see the possibilities.

It was a great experience working with the Google Gears team and we now look forward to working closely with HTML5 team.

Now that HTML5 is moving towards supporting offline capability, that is an easy decision. Eventually, as we see HTML5 support in all browsers, offline support will work by default without any additional plug-ins, which is always a better option than pushing an add-on. This obviously means there is some work to be done on the application side, but as HTML5 is a standard, offline support should work in browsers that support it.

As far as Zoho Apps are concerned, we will be moving towards supporting HTML5.

but what made google to drop the services? how does that effect zoho newly developing applications?

I’m pleased Zoho is keeping up on the cutting edge, only I’m wondering how difficult would it be to offer a dual choice of HTML5/Gears (emulation?) for those with older systems (like for wallet strapped home schools and me with older iBooks with Panther OS 10.3) whose machine and OS can’t be upgraded to these new browsers’ capabilities? It’d be more than worth a subscription to preserve that feature set.
